I had been looking for a semi-rugged portable drive for quite some time, but happened on this one by chance and ended up buying it. As I have not used this drive for a significant length of time I cannot comment as to its durability yet, so I will instead give my initial impressions and update later with durability/reliability comments as necessary. Rather than run off at the mouth about all sorts of nonsense, I will simply address what I consider to be selling points or potential hang-ups for someone who is doing some research and comparison shopping like I was before I decided on this one. Sleek, durable and a bit faster then my old Seagate, this 2.5" external hard drive comes out of the box ready to perform. This stealthy system is lightweight and packed with a 500GB external hard drive that simply leaves the higher priced competition in the dust. Its fitted with a one button setup on top of the unit. Simple to use, the drive can be set to remember the files/folders to store in the preferences folder. With the installed software package, scheduling backups and setting security levels is not that much of a task. File compression is always a good choice to remember. All in all, the jury is still out when it comes to the on board StoreJet software. The only thing missing is Firewire support. Love the Silicon covering the drive, Seems very drop resistant. The cord is a little bulky, but any USB to Mini USB cord works fine also. Does not require power. Have not found a device that can't power it yet. Seems to access fast, and has a HDD Indicator lamp. Have not used the built in Backup software, But works great with Synctoy. I rigorously tested this card and it performs at sustained speeds of 8MB/s write and 28MB/s read. It has handled the abuse of being re-inserted into the dslr every day and it has never lost a photo or hiccuped in any way. The speed is even more than than enough for videos even at 24 megabits per second. It worked fine for a couple of months, till today, when I tried to copy back the footage I captured this Thanksgiving. Suddenly, the card is not recognized by any of my systems (mac, pc, even the camera). Everything is lost - all the precious two hour footage of the grandparents singing, my cute nephews and nieces, the jovial times around the fireplace, the great Turkey feast. All, just gone. If one can't tell, I am distraught. To any potential buyers, please, you may think that you'll be great about backing up your footage/pictures, you may think that these 350 (and counting) odd people who gave this product a 1 star - are just exceptions, you may think this won't happen to you. However, be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN your product (be it a digital camera, memory card reader or--in my case--the Palm T|X PDA which for some STRANGE reason doesn't read it) reads it. Just because your device is new doesn't necessarily mean that it will recognize SDHC cards (as opposed to the older SD cards). If your device recognizes SDHC cards, then by all means go forth and thrash. You won't find a better card for the price. The Kindle manual states that is uses SD cards, but didn't specify if it could use SDHC cards too. After chatting with a few people in the Kindle Discussion room, I found that others are succesfully using SDHC cards in their Kindle's, but Amazon Kindle Tech Support told me that they will not support SDHC cards at this time, should they fail. So being an avid reader, I took the chance and ordered the SanDisk 8GB SDHC card and it works like a champ in the Kindle. I've loaded 7 books to it already and can read and write to it without a problem. Be aware though, that only 7.3 GB of space is available on the card for storage when used in the Kindle. I have had no problems with any of the SanDisk SD, SD Micro, or XD cards I've purchased over the years. They are reliable & durable and I will continue to purchase this brand again in the future.
